CALL FOR SCORES – Composer Spotlight

Leading chamber music ensemble in Wales, Ensemble Cymru (resident ensemble at Bangor University and Venue Cymru) and Composers of Wales invite composers to apply to be a featured composer in one of three Composer Spotlights in May 2018.

Entry is open to all existing members of Composers of Wales, and all new members who sign up for annual membership prior to 15 November 2017. Members should ensure that their subscription payments are up to date.

Composers are invited to enter a programme of their own work or works with the entire programme being no longer than 15 minutes. The programme will include works scored for between 1 and 3 instruments. The instruments available will be three of the composer’s choice from the following: harp, flute, oboe, clarinet, violin, viola, cello and double bass. Only exceptional entries involving four instruments will be considered. String Quartets will not be considered. [Example of an eligible programme would be Sonata for solo harp (4’), duo for clarinet and flute (5’), trio for flute, clarinet and harp (5’).]

As the call is for existing works, there is no prize money or commission fee; but Composers of Wales will reimburse reasonable travel and accommodation expenses in order for the chosen composers to attend their spotlight event.

Ensemble Cymru’s tour will be the culmination of a two-year project featuring the harp in chamber music co-curated by its principal harp and Artistic Director. We would therefore encourage entries that include the harp. Particular care should be taken to ensure that parts written for the harp are idiomatically written for the instrument.

1. Composers of successful entries should hold the following period of Tuesday 1 May 2018 to Thursday 3 May 2018 and Saturday 5 May for a rehearsal at a time and location to be advised and the following dates, one of which will be their spotlight performance should they be successful:

2. Composers will be expected to support Ensemble Cymru and Composers of Wales in promoting the event.

3. In identifying successful entries, consideration will be given to how realistic an effective performance is within the limited rehearsal time available.

4. All scores that do not conform to the specified instrumentation, or need an additional performer not listed above, will be automatically disqualified from this call for scores.

5. Each winning entrant will be offered up to one complimentary ticket and two complimentary tickets for guests for their Spotlight event, and the following Ensemble Cymru Concert, on one of the three Spotlight Performance Dates.

6. Paid up Members of Composers of Wales will be granted free entry to all the spotlight events, but will require a ticket for the following Ensemble Cymru Concert. Please approach Ensemble Cymru’s office by 20 April 2018 for an exclusive discounted offer for Composer of Wales members (

7. The Spotlight Event including the featured composer’s participation may be recorded/ streamed by Ensemble Cymru and Composers of Wales, and the featured composer agrees the use of said recording for promotion purposes.

8. Should a composer not be available for rehearsal and/or spotlight performance, Composers of Wales and Ensemble Cymru reserve the right to withdraw the offer in favour of another entrant.

9. The Spotlight performances and any offer are subject to successful funding application by Composers of Wales.
